To know if your music is right for The Utah:
1) Get familiar with the club
Come see a show at The Utah. Think about why the bands you saw play here were successful, why they fit the room. Look at our ad in the Guardian to see who plays here often.
2) Think about how well your music might fit the club
The Hotel Utah Saloon proudly supports ALL types of music. Due to our limited size and the proximity of the stage to the audience, we primarily focus on American Roots, Rock, Alt. Country, Singer/Songwriters, and Bluegrass, but other genres are welcome, too (like Punk with acoustic tendencies).

What to do when you're booked at The Utah:
Other than slamming your date's hand in a car door, there is nothing worse than playing to an empty room. Take steps to fill the room.
- Don't play in SF for two weeks before or after a booked show at The Utah.
- Create an email list and collect addresses at every show.
- Send an email about the show out two weeks before -- and again two days before -- the show.
- Make flyers. Put them up around town and always drop off a few here.
- Leave a few posters with the night manager/bartender to put in our marquee.
- Phone your friends, enemies, and families. (If you're the boss, threaten their jobs!)

The night of the show:
1. Show up for load-in at the designated time (as told to you when the show
was booked).
2. Introduce yourself (or have your spokesperson introduce her/himself) to the doorman, soundman, and night manager.
3. Be flexible about soundchecks.
- Because The Hotel Utah Saloon is a small room, there is no need to mic drums, amps, etc. except on rare occasions.
- On multiple-band nights, the first band up usually gets the full check; the following acts get a quick line/mic check before starting their show.
- After the first band, the soundman will have the channel levels set just fine for the rest of the show.
- Trust your soundman, he's your friend. He wants you to sound your best, so don't irritate him by ignoring his requests for you to turn down your stage volume, etc. He knows the system and the room.
4. Above all, PLAY TO THE ROOM.
If people are covering their ears, or leaving to go to the bar area, that's a pretty good indication that you should turn down.
5. Please try to start at the times designated when the show was booked.
If you were given a 9 p.m. start time, tell your friends 8:30. They'll
be right on time.
